KeymasterHi David,
The issue is that the FCPXML describes the media as being lets say 2 streams each of 4 channels, but when we look at the actual essence the first has 4 channels and then the second has two. We would need the FCPXML in question and probably the asset r45.1.
FCPX should not be creating XML’s like this, it is not compliant with Apples own spec, but it does create them.
X2Pro may work as the code shuffled the channels regardless of where they were, so if it said there were 16 but only 12 were there it would take them and allocate them from 1 to 12. This shuffling was not correct as we were changing what should be where so we changed to the spec Apple told us to apply.
I will raise with the Product Manager and development and advise.
Yours Sincerely
James.

ParticipantWell that sounds frustrating. Did you say that you needed me to send assets for testing?

KeymasterDavid,
as James said in a previous post:The issue is that the FCPXML describes the media as being lets say 2 streams each of 4 channels, but when we look at the actual essence the first has 4 channels and then the second has two. We would need the FCPXML in question and probably the asset r45.1.
Would you be able to let us have that? You can use Dropbox or if you need it we have a FTP server that you can upload it to.

ParticipantCan you tell me the file name(s) of one of the trouble clips?
These are all marketing spots for a current Sony Pictures film, so I can’t just send you all the assets and media. I’ll need to recreate the error with cleared, de-identified, or watermarked material.

KeymasterIf you can send us (post here) the FCPXML we can check what the file name is that goes with a clip which fails.
Tim.

KeymasterHi David,
We have discussed at length here with Product Management and Development, it appears after raising with Apple that they are probably not going to resolve any time soon the discrepancy between the XML detailing X streams with Y channels each, referring to media that is X streams of Y and Z channels. Therefore we will in the next release of X2Pro shuffle the audio down and take them as they are, and not as they are detailed in the XML. This is not something we want to do as ideally Apple should resolve and reconcile the difference between the FCPXML and MOV specifications, but we are where we are.
Regarding media, yes we totally understand, and just so you are aware we only ever use media in the lab to investigate an issue and then delete it, we have several NDA’s in place with Sony. But we would normally confirm which covered which before arranging any media, and provide a drop only ftp site. However we don’t need any media from yourself as we are 99.9% sure what the issue is. You can confirm it yourself by checking the audio layout of the file.
The only workaround we can see is to regenerate the mov in question so that the number of channels is equal in each stream. You may have to import this into an Editor, and in this case copy channels 5 and 6 to channels 7 and 8. Or create it as one audio file with 6 channels, and then replace the one in the FCP project.
Hope the above helps.
Yours Sincerely
James.
