Translating Audio Component Level Edits to AAF

I am developing an all-mono file workflow to avoid embedding media in exported AAF files. To do that, even simple stereo files must be converted to split mono files prior to importing into FCP. Once imported, the two mono files are paired in a synced clip which is then edited into the timeline.

I have a small demo project containing three of these synced clips. It appears that X2Pro will translate volume automation and fade handles applied to the synced clips but it does not translate edits/volume automation/fade handles on the individual components within the synced clip. Is this a known limitation? If so, it means a lot of the detailed editing work possible in Final Cut Pro is eliminated when going to Pro Tools. Unfortunately, the obvious workaround is to ungroup the synced clips in the timeline so their underlying components become standard mono clips. However, doing this eliminates all the component-level editing work (this is an FCP limitation).

I’m happy to provide a library, XML, source files, etc. if it’s helpful.

Dear DC,

When we create the AAF any multi channel audio files are split into separate channels, as this is fundamentally how PT works.

We support fades, transitions, J and L cuts, automation / rubber banding / volume adjustments.

Anything we cannot translate we will warn about, i.e. panning, timemaps and effects.

Apologies I cannot see an issue with your XML converted into an AAF. Can you take a screen shot of what you are seeing in PT that is wrong please.
